We renovated it ourselves, and kept the good bones

We bought the flat in 2025. Beautiful bones, but in a tired state. My uncle and I got to work: stripped the flat entirely and rebuilt everything from scratch.

Market House was built in the 1930s and still has its steel windows and the original wooden doors. Inside, everything is new: a sage-green kitchen with a dishwasher and an espresso machine, a bathroom with a rain shower, herringbone floors, and a quiet bedroom with a queen bed.

There is air conditioning that doubles as heating, a bedroom fan for warm nights, a washing machine, fast fibre wifi and a dining table that doubles as a desk. This part of the city centre is not affected by load-shedding, so the lights and the wifi stay on.

The city's market square since 1696

By day a craft market and street musicians below the balcony, and the Art Deco façades around it. Heaven Coffee is next door, Bree Street's restaurants one block over, the Company's Garden and the museums five minutes on foot. To the side, Lion's Head.

Around the corner

Greenmarket Square has been the city's market square since 1696. The Old Town House, with its Dutch and Flemish paintings, is on the square itself; St George's Cathedral, the Slave Lodge and the Iziko museums are five minutes away, Long Street and the Bo-Kaap ten. Kloof Street, Camps Bay and the V&A Waterfront are a short Uber ride.

Cape Town International Airport is about 20 km away, 25 to 30 minutes by Uber or Bolt. Everything in the City Bowl is walkable from here; after dark, take an Uber rather than walking.

Questions guests ask

Is there parking?

Not at the building. There are paid parking garages within a few minutes' walk and metered street parking around the square by day. Most guests don't bring a car: the centre is walkable and Uber and Bolt are cheap.

How do I get there from the airport?

Cape Town International is about 20 km away: 25 to 30 minutes by Uber or Bolt, ordered from the app at arrivals. The MyCiTi airport bus runs to the Civic Centre, a ten-minute walk from the flat.

Is the area safe?

Market House has a doorman and 24-hour security, and you enter the flat with your own door code. The square and the streets around it are busy by day. After dark, do as locals do and take an Uber rather than walk.

What about load-shedding?

This part of the city centre is on a protected grid and is not affected by load-shedding. Lights, wifi and the lift keep running.

Can I work from the flat?

Yes. Fibre wifi, a dining table that doubles as a desk, air conditioning, and a quiet residential building. Heaven Coffee next door for a change of scene.

Can I arrive early or late?

Check-in is any time after 15:00: the door code works around the clock and the doorman knows you're coming. Earlier check-in depends on the previous guest; luggage drop-off can usually be arranged. Check-out is by 10:00.

Do you take longer stays?

Yes, especially from May to September. Weekly stays are 10% off, monthly stays 20% off, and for one to three months we're happy to quote a monthly rate. Write to us.
